Quotes From the Night of Matchsticks POVs ...

In celebration of the release of Night of Matchsticks in just a few days, I’ve put together some quotes and short captions to encapsulate our three favorite POVs and their stories in this instalment. Read on to hear from The Collector, Isaline, and Jack! 🌌✨

Take a breath ... 🌬

As I was writing π˜•π˜ͺ𝘨𝘩𝘡 𝘰𝘧 π˜”π˜’π˜΅π˜€π˜©π˜΄π˜΅π˜ͺ𝘀𝘬𝘴 and developing the characters of the Collector and Caladrius, I kept having to ask myself: what makes the people of Benemourne human, and what sets the Collector and Caladrius apart from them? Soon, that thought morphed into a different kind of question: what could be more mortal than breathing?

As humans, we breathe from the moment we’re born to the moment we’re gone. It’s a hallmark of living existence and then of dying. We all breathe.

But not the Collector.

Not Caladrius.

Not yet.

What happens when Death feels the urge to take a deep breath?

Keep Moving ... πŸš‚

Isaline will always be a personal character for me (truly, they all are πŸ˜…) but this is especially true in π˜•π˜ͺ𝘨𝘩𝘡 𝘰𝘧 π˜”π˜’π˜΅π˜€π˜©π˜΄π˜΅π˜ͺ𝘀𝘬𝘴. I wrote from a lot of my own experience in this instalment, and many of Isaline’s feelings going to a brand new, giant place are my own.

I know what it’s like to be traveling somewhere new and scary, to be on a train you feel like you can’t stopβ€”and many of you will know that feeling, too!

To Isaline, it’s so much easier to take the path of least resistance and just to keep … walking … and see where that path takes her. Even if the easy thing isn’t always the right thing, and even if she knows it.

She has a message for you ... πŸ“œ

[CW: lost memories] Sometimes we lose parts of the past without knowing they’re gone. I’m constantly reminded by friends or family of things that happened years ago that slipped my mind! But when π˜•π˜ͺ𝘨𝘩𝘡 𝘰𝘧 π˜”π˜’π˜΅π˜€π˜©π˜΄π˜΅π˜ͺ𝘀𝘬𝘴 was forming and I was spending more time with Jack, I had to try and understand what it would be like to lose an important memory and 𝘬𝘯𝘰𝘸 it.

If, like Jack, I lost a crucial piece of the puzzle, I think I would itch to get that information backβ€”especially if it had everything to do with a major discovery, the end of a career, and a lot of one-on-one time spent with an arch-nemesis.

In π˜•π˜ͺ𝘨𝘩𝘡 𝘰𝘧 π˜”π˜’π˜΅π˜€π˜©π˜΄π˜΅π˜ͺ𝘀𝘬𝘴, Jack is dealing with that very feeling, that itch, that 𝘱𝘢𝘭𝘭, and he’s willing to do anything to figure it out. Even if it means being a tad reckless …
